When we first visited the house, the fireplace made such an impact on us with its beautiful, dimensional look. Totally hand-crafted by the original owner of the home, this centerpiece of the living space had a lot of potential to update it with a little more of a contemporary feel to it, but maintaining its originality.
We decided to take all the colors we used throughout the house to weave it into a mosaic.
With 182 pieces total, we had to make this into a thoughtful multi-step process. First, we took all the pieces off the wall and numbered both the spot on the wall and the block! Because someone in this house is really geeky with spreadsheets (me, Natasha!)… I had to list in columns which number blocks would belong to what color category. After everything balanced, we painted the blocks. Sophie did a lot of the painting and made it into a fun project! Then, when Sabrina, Bella and Brianna came for Thanksgiving, we made it a family project of piecing the wall back together. Sabrina became a little obsessed with painting every nail hole and making sure it looked finished. We really love the way it turned out. What do you think?!
